Factores asociados a la adherencia al tratamiento de la hipertensión arterialIntroduction and Objective: The leading cause of death worldwide is heart disease; therefore, the management of these illnesses is of prime importance. Hence, the relevance to determine which factors impact cardiovascular patients’ adherence to pharmacological treatment.
Methods: Observational cross-sectional study in which 165 participants were surveyed and selected through a non-probabilistic convenience sampling at Expo Cibao 2021, Santiago, Dominican Republic from September 30 to October 1, 2021. The implemented questionnaire consisted of general social and demographic questions, relevant medical history, specific adherence questions, and the Martín-Bayarre-Grau (MBG) questionnaire.
Results: From the sample, 68.36% corresponds to the female sex. Additionally, participants who have health insurance have a significantly higher level of adherence to treatment than those who do not. On the other hand, recreational smoke users have less adherence compared to non-users. Furthermore, it could be seen that, although most of the participants have lost at least one first-line relative to cardiovascular disease, those who have not lost a relative have significantly better adherence to treatment.
Conclusion: On average, the studied population had partial adherence to hypertension treatment, regardless of the type of drug used. Half of the participants referred to have forgotten to take their medication at some point. Moreover, factors that significantly affected treatment adherence were marital status, having health insurance, consuming smoke products, and not having a first-line relative who died of cardiovascular disease.
