Information literacy in the digital age: an overview of current research

This article is a literature review study of information literacy and seeks to see its development and relevance and relates with digital skills. It is essential to conduct such an analysis to determine how such a skill affects the learning process. The need is further heightened in the present world where the disparity of technology access is huge and present-day socio-economic scenario is complex.

To carry out the present study, a review of the scientific literature published in the period between 2020 and 2024 was carried out, using recognized academic databases such as ERIC, Semantic Scholar and JSTOR. The studies analyzed discuss how information literacy and its relation to digital environment competencies which is studied in different educational contexts.

The difference between these results shows that information literacy and skills to work in a digital environment are related. Right now, though, there are major barriers like the digital divide and teachers’ lack of training in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). In this paper, it shows how vital it is to have educational policies that enable equity access to technology, as well as the critical and ethical competencies to achieve effective information literacy in an age of digitalization.
