Open-access What Do Teachers Read? Analysis of the Books that Dominican Teachers Report Reading

Abstract

This quantitative study analyses the books that pre-university teachers in the Dominican Republic report having read, with the aim of describing their reading identity. An ad hoc questionnaire was administered to a sample of 550 participants of school principals, and teachers at the preschool and primary levels. The findings reveal that teachers reported reading literature books (46%), followed by books for personal use (39%), and, to a lesser extent, texts for professional use (15%). The text declared as the most read was the Bible; the rest of the titles are mostly linked to the prescriptions of the Dominican school canon, which reveals a weak reading cultural capital among teachers. There is a clear need to strengthen public policies to develop interest and reading habits in initial and continuing teachers training.
