Situation of rural Colombian women and their access to land

Abstract

The following article, as the final product of a documentary analysis, reviews the situation of rural women in Colombia regarding land tenure. It shows the historical existence of great inequality in the land distribution, and how this has been the root of multiple armed conflicts occurred in Colombia since the twentieth century. Despite the various attempts to mitigate this inequality it persists, which puts in evidence failed attempts at an agrarian reform. It is also shown that rural women have less access to land than men, due to the cultural factors and patriarchal dynamics, which makes them a highly vulnerable social group. From the analysis it is concluded that there is a high unevenness of land distribution, verified by a Gini coefficient of .89; which shows the existence of is a clear difference in land tenure between genders since men have a higher quantity of land in their possession; besides, there is still a high level informality in the land tenure, a condition that affects women to a great extent, resulting on a difficulty that hinders their access to credits and technical assistance, which does not help them to get out of poverty.
